Where our coffee comes from

Photographs from the two places our green coffee passes through: the smallholder gardens of Central Aceh, and our collection warehouse outside Medan. No stock imagery. Tap any photo to see it full size.

The gardens

Ketol, Central Aceh

Arabica grown at altitude in Pondok Balik, a village in Ketol district. Coffee here is planted in small plots under shade rather than on open estates, which is why the rows look more like gardens than plantations.

A smallholder plot in the hills above Ketol, where most of our Gayo arabica is grown. Desa Pondok Balik, Kec. Ketol, Kab. Aceh Tengah, Aceh

Specialty plot in Ketol

Shade trees and coffee planted together, the standard arrangement across the Gayo highlands. Desa Pondok Balik, Kec. Ketol, Kab. Aceh Tengah, Aceh

Coffee under shade

Mature trees on a working plot. Harvest in the Gayo highlands runs across several months rather than one short window.

The cherries

Selective picking

Cherries are picked by hand, pass by pass, as they ripen. Everything that reaches our warehouse starts here.

Ripe cherries on the branch

Cherries ripen unevenly on the same branch, so pickers return to each tree several times through the season.

After the picking

The day's harvest before it goes to pulping. Sorting at this stage decides most of what the lot will taste like.

The farmers

Central Aceh

Gayo coffee is grown almost entirely by smallholders working plots of a hectare or two. These are some of the people behind the lots we buy.

The warehouse

Sunggal, Deli Serdang

Green coffee comes down from Aceh to our facility outside Medan, where lots are held, sorted and prepared before export.
