Two sanity checks confirm these numbers are in the right neighbourhood. The FDA puts regular brewed non-specialty coffee at 113 to 247 mg per 12 fluid ounces, and our 12 fl oz row sits comfortably inside that band. Notice how wide those published ranges are. That width is the real answer to the question. It is not measurement sloppiness; it is genuine variation in how people make coffee.
How to Estimate Your Own Cup in Three Steps
You can calculate a defensible number for any coffee you own, without a laboratory.
Step 1 — Find the species. Check the bag for Coffea arabica or Coffea canephora (Robusta). Named Sumatran single origins from the northern highlands are Arabica; Sumatran Robusta grows mostly in the southern lowlands and usually enters blends without a single-origin identity. Step 2 — Apply the species figure. Use roughly 1.2% for Arabica and 2.2% for Robusta as caffeine content by weight of roasted coffee.
Step 3 — Run the arithmetic.

The 0.85 accounts for extraction: caffeine dissolves readily, and a normal brew pulls most but not all of it out of the grounds.
Worked example. A 15 g dose of Gayo Arabica: 15 × 1.2 × 10 = 180 mg present in the grounds, × 0.85 = ~153 mg in the cup.
Swap in a Sumatran Robusta at the same 15 g, and you get 15 × 2.2 × 10 × 0.85 = ~280 mg. Same origin, same dose, same brewer, nearly double the caffeine. Species is the single largest lever you control.
Treat the result as an estimate with an honest error bar of perhaps ±25%. For menu labelling, product packaging, or anything with a regulatory dimension, commission lot-specific testing instead.
Why There Is No Single Number for “Sumatra”
Geography does not set caffeine content, genetics do, and preparation does the rest.
Research on Indonesian green coffee supports this. A 2023 study of beans from Geopark Rinjani in Lombok found an average caffeine of 1.09% in Arabica against 2.09% in Robusta.
Those samples were not Sumatran, so treat them as evidence about species rather than about Sumatra specifically — but the species gap is the point, and it holds across origins. Broader figures for roasted coffee generally run about 1.1–1.5% for Arabica and 2.0–2.7% for Robusta, which is why our calculator uses 1.2% and 2.2% as working midpoints.
What this means practically: a Sumatran Arabica and a Colombian Arabica brewed at the same dose and the same beverage size will land in the same caffeine territory. Country of origin is close to irrelevant once species and recipe are fixed.
Strong Flavour Is Not Strong Caffeine
This is where most confusion starts. People reach for “strong” to describe bitterness, body, roast intensity, or stimulant load, and those four things do not track each other.
Sumatra feels powerful because the Sumatra coffee taste profile is dense, earthy, herbal, and chocolate-forward, with a long finish and muted brightness. That texture comes from wet-hulling and from Arabica grown slowly at altitude. Put a dark Mandheling beside a bright washed Ethiopian at identical doses, and the Mandheling will taste twice as heavy while carrying essentially the same caffeine.

What Brewing Method Actually Changes
The 2024 Applied Sciences review compiled caffeine measurements across brewing methods, reported in mg per 100 ml:

Read those ranges carefully, because they demolish two popular claims at once. “Cold brew always has the most caffeine” is false — cold brew overlaps almost entirely with French press. “Espresso is the strongest coffee” is a concentration statement, not a dose statement: espresso shows the widest range on the chart precisely because a 36 ml drink can be dosed and pulled a dozen different ways, and it still delivers less total caffeine than a large filter coffee.
The review’s own conclusion is that longer extraction time raised caffeine across every method tested, and that higher water temperature and a higher coffee-to-water ratio pushed it further in cold brew and French press.
Compare milligrams per serving, not milligrams per millilitre. Concentration tells you how the coffee tastes. Total dose tells you how it will affect you.
Roast Level and the Scoop Problem
Dark roast does not reliably mean more caffeine, and it does not reliably mean less either. Studies that compare roast levels produce inconsistent results, partly because caffeine survives roasting largely intact while other compounds burn off, and partly because the answer flips depending on whether you measure by weight or by volume.
That measurement detail matters more than the roast itself. Roasting drives off moisture and puffs the bean, so darker beans are less dense. A scoop of dark roast holds fewer grams of coffee than the same scoop of light roast — so measuring by volume quietly lowers your dose and your caffeine, while measuring by weight keeps both constant.

Café Servings, Blends, and Decaf
Three cases sit outside the home-brewing table above.
Large café servings scale fast. Serving size compounds with dose. A 20 fl oz Sumatra brewed on a Clover has been reported at around 470 mg of caffeine — more than the FDA’s entire daily reference figure in a single cup. The origin did not do that. The volume did.
Supermarket “Sumatra blends” may not be pure Arabica. A blend that names Sumatra on the front may still contain Robusta, which changes the arithmetic substantially. If the bag does not state the species, you cannot estimate the caffeine.
Decaf still has caffeine. The FDA notes that decaffeinated coffee typically contains 2 to 15 mg per 8 fl oz cup. Low, but not zero — relevant if you are highly sensitive or drinking several cups in an evening.
How Much Is Too Much?
The FDA cites 400 mg per day as an amount not generally associated with negative effects for most healthy adults — roughly two to three 12 fl oz cups of coffee. It also stresses that sensitivity varies widely between individuals, and that some medical conditions and medications increase it.
Read against our table, that means about two large filter cups of Sumatra Arabica reaches the reference figure. One 20 oz café serving can exceed it on its own.
Lower thresholds apply to some people. European guidance sets 200 mg per day for pregnant and breastfeeding women, and the WHO advises pregnant women exceeding 300 mg daily to cut back. We buy and cup Sumatran green coffee, and the pattern is consistent: the lots that taste heaviest on the cupping table are not the ones with the most caffeine. Wet-hulled Gayo and Lintong Arabica arrive with the jade colour and irregular bean shape that signal giling basah, and they cup dense and earthy — but they are Arabica, and they behave like Arabica.
The practical implication for roasters and café owners is that you cannot market a Sumatran single origin as a high-caffeine product on the strength of its flavour profile. If a customer wants more caffeine per cup, the honest answers are a larger dose, a larger serving, or a Robusta component — not a darker roast and not a heavier-tasting origin.
